Catonsville resident Ahmed Ayaz died after going swimming in Keuka Lake when he jumped into the water from a pontoon boat in the Town of Urbana to go for a swim, according to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

Ayaz was unable to get back to the boat at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Friday, May 12, and went underwater, prompting an extensive multi-agency search, where they pulled out all the stops in an attempt to locate the teen.

Officials noted that Ayaz was not wearing a life-jacket or floatation device when he jumped into the water.

With an assist from sonar and an underwater drone, searchers were able to locate Ayaz, the sheriff’s office announced on Monday, May 15.

"Sheriff (James) Allard thanks all the responding agencies for their cooperation and outstanding service," he said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the Ayaz family and our thoughts and prayers are for their recovery from this tragedy."
